Immediate Attention for Dental Emergencies
At Shine Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we know that the idea of dental emergencies can be a scary thought. Luckily, a real emergency is rare, although there are plenty of smaller issues that may come up from time to time.
If your child faces a dental emergency, please call us immediately. We offer an emergency contact number for urgent treatment after regular office hours.
Our priority is to ensure your child receives prompt and effective care to alleviate pain and address the emergency.
If your child has bitten their lip or tongue severely enough to cause bleeding, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress. If the bleeding doesn’t stop or the bite is severe, seek immediate medical attention or call us for advice.
If an object is caught in your child's teeth, try to gently remove it with dental floss. Be careful not to use sharp or pointed instruments. If you cannot remove the object, call our office for assistance.
In case of a broken, chipped, or fractured tooth, rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Collect any tooth fragments, if possible, and call us immediately for further guidance.
For a knocked-out permanent tooth, find the tooth and handle it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it without scrubbing and try to reinsert it in the socket. If this isn’t possible, place the tooth in a container of milk and bring it with you to our office. Contact us immediately for emergency care.
If your child has a loose tooth due to an injury, contact our office as soon as possible. Do not attempt to remove the tooth yourself as this could cause further damage.
For a toothache, clean the affected area thoroughly. Rinse the mouth with warm water and gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between teeth. If pain persists, contact our office for advice. Avoid placing aspirin on the aching tooth or gum tissues.
If you suspect your child has a broken jaw, use a cold compress to reduce swelling and go to your nearest emergency room immediately. Contact our office as soon as possible for follow-up care.
Preventing dental injuries is key. Encourage your child to wear a mouth guard during sports and recreational activities. Teach them to avoid chewing on hard objects like ice and hard candy that can crack teeth.
